Supporting Young Athletes: Our Role in Steven Adams’ Basketball Programs
Here at the What Ever It Takes Clinic, we’re passionate about empowering athletes to reach their full potential. We’re thrilled to share our involvement in supporting the Steven Adams High School Invitationals, and Team Adams, an incredible programme fostering young basketball talent in New Zealand and beyond. Our team also works closely with aspiring basketball athletes to support long-term pathways to achieving their goals, ensuring they have the tools to succeed both on and off the court.
Steven Adams High School Invitational: Building Strong Foundations
Each year, the Steve Adams High School Invitational brings together promising young basketball players in New Zealand for an intensive camp focused on skill development, athletic and personal growth. Our team has been proud to provide comprehensive physiotherapy, injury management, and strength and conditioning support to ensure these athletes perform at their best while staying healthy.
From assessments to tailored rehab programs, we’ve worked closely with the programme to help build resilient athletes. Our goal is to equip these young athletes with the tools they need to excel, whether they’re chasing a scholarship or aiming to elevate their game.
Team Adams: Taking Talent Global
The Invitational also serves as a launchpad for Team Adams, a select group of standout players who travel overseas to compete in prestigious AAU tournaments in the USA. These tours offer athletes a unique opportunity to showcase their skills, experience life as student-athletes, and pursue basketball scholarships.
In 2024, our clinical lead, Brad Takai, joined Team Adams on their inaugural USA tour, providing hands-on physiotherapy and injury management. From warm-up routines to recovery sessions, Brad ensured the team stayed in peak condition while navigating the demands of training, competing, and being on tour.
In April 2025, our senior physiotherapist, Laura, continued our support, travelling with the Team Adams girls squad to Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Laura’s expertise in sports team sideline management, and injury prevention helped the athletes perform to their optimal throughout their tour.
Long-Term Athlete Development: A Holistic Approach
Beyond the Invitational and Team Adams tours, our team is dedicated to supporting these aspiring basketball athletes in achieving their long-term goals. We work alongside the athletes to create personalised development programmes that address their unique needs, including:
Injury Management and Prevention: We help athletes recover from injuries and implement strategies to minimise future risks, ensuring they can train and compete consistently.
Strength and Conditioning: Our programmes are designed to enhance athleticism, build resilience, and prepare athletes for the physical demands of college sports.
Workload Management: Balancing basketball training, gym sessions, school, and other responsibilities can be challenging. We provide guidance to help athletes manage their physical workload safely, reducing burnout and optimising performance.
By fostering a holistic approach, we empower these young athletes to pursue their dreams with confidence, whether that’s securing a scholarship or thriving in a competitive sports environment.
Why We Support Young Athletes
Our involvement with Steven Adams programmes reflects our commitment to nurturing the next generation of athletes. We believe in more than just treating injuries—we’re here to empower young players with the knowledge and strategies to thrive both on and off the court. By combining evidence-based physiotherapy with personalized strength and conditioning, we’re helping these athletes chase their dreams with confidence.
We’re incredibly proud to support the Steven Adams athletes, and we look forward to continuing our support for the High School Invitational, Team Adams, and the long-term development of these talented athletes in the years to come. Together, we’re building stronger, healthier athletes ready to take on the world.
